$8.9 mn raised for famine victims in Horn of Africa
August 20th, 2011 - 12:23 am ICT by IANSAbu Dhabi, Aug 19 (IANS/WAM) A nationwide telethon being organised in the United Arab of Emirates to raise funds for victims of famine and drought in the Horn of Africa, raised about 33 million dirhams ($8.9 million) on its second day.
Dontations were sought through the 90-mintue live show telecast on Abu Dhabi TV.
The telethon has been launched following the instructions of UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi under the theme “Quenching their thirst”.
Over 165 million people in the Horn of Africa region are affected by the drought which hit Somalia, Djibouti and Ethiopia. During the past few weeks, around 29,000 children have died of hunger.
