London, February 10 (ANI): A septuagenarian roller skater in England has been charged with being a danger to the public, after he was accused of skating in a restricted area.
Geoff Dornan, 71, who appeared before North Sefton magistrates court in Merseyside, will now have to prove that he is not a hazard to pedestrians where he skates in the seaside town of Southport.
Though police officials had decided not to pursue a case against him after confiscating his blades, Sefton council pushed ahead with a prosecution.
It is hardly surprising the polices action was abandoned at the last moment on the grounds it would not be in the public interest, the Sun quoted Dornan, of Ormskirk, Lancs, as saying.
I take this to be the legalese for it would be a total waste of money, since they have not got a leg to stand on, he added.
He also expressed his sorrow at the confiscation of his rollerblades by the police.
In the months during which I have been unjustly deprived of my blades, I was shocked to discover how swiftly the health of someone of my age can deteriorate, said Dornan, who has a 2,075-person Facebook group devoted to him.
At the time of my arrest, I was as fit as a flea, and entirely free of pain. Yet by Christmas, I found myself confined to bed with severe back trouble, he added.
He said that he could not believe that people found his skating troublesome.
For once, I am speechless. Monday is crunch time for me, he said of his prosecution.
I would hugely appreciate it if as many as possible of my supporters would turn up at 2pm to witness my trial in the ample spectators gallery at Southport (North Sefton) magistrates” court.
It could be fun. If nothing else, I can assure the ladies my solicitor is drop-dead dishy, he added. (ANI)
