7-country committee work has no authority to manage area of Preah VihearJuly 11th, 2008 - 3:05 pm ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
Director-General of the Information Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tharit Charungvat (ธฤต จรุงวัฒน์), says a committee consisting of representatives of seven countries does not have the responsibility to negotiate on the management of the 4.6-kilosquare-meter overlapping area at Preah Vihear.
The director-general says the committee’s work concerns only the protection and development of the Preah Vihear temple.
Chairman of the national committee on Thailand’s World Heritage sites, Pongpol Adireksarn (ปองพล อดิเรกสาร), has earlier said that he supports the establishment of the seven-country committee as he believes that it can resolve rows over the management of the overlapping area. The director-general says Mr Pongpol’s remark caused a misunderstanding about the committee’s responsibility.
