Kabul, June 23 (Xinhua) At least 55 Taliban insurgents have been killed in a major offensive launched by the Afghan forces backed by US-led international forces in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Paktika, a military statement said Monday. Around 24 insurgents have been wounded in the gunfight, which started after the militants opened fire on a convoy of the government forces early Sunday.
“Coalition forces in the Zerok district of Paktika province inflicted heavy casualties in response to an extremist ambush in that area. At least 55 anti-Afghan forces were killed and 25 wounded,” the statement said.
In another development Sunday, the US-led coalition forces in a joint operation with Afghan troops killed several in insurgents in Sangin district of the southern province of Helmand, the military said.
Taliban has not made any comment on the attacks so far.
