52 held in China over ‘gutter oil’
December 20th, 2011 - 7:22 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, Dec 20 (IANS) Fifty-two people were arrested in China for selling cooking oil made from the leftovers collected from restaurant gutters, a media report said Tuesday.
They were held in Jiangxi province.
Over 2,000 tonnes of gutter oil were produced illegally in the province’s Nanchang county since 2010, police said.
The manufacturers sell the oil to wholesale firms which then supply it to markets and restaurants, China Daily reported.
China had launched a nationwide campaign against the sale of gutter oil in August. By November, over 700 people involved in the illegal business were detained in 28 provinces and municipalities, officials said.
