February 1st, 2011 - 11:56 am ICT by IANSBogota, Feb 1 (IANS/EFE) Five people were killed and 10 wounded when an assailant opened fire in a dance hall during carnival celebrations in the southern Colombian town of Tuquerres, an official said. The dead were all members of a single family, said Fabio Trujillo, an official of the Narino provincial government.
The massacre followed an altercation, according to the official, who said the attacker left the hall after the confrontation only to return with a gun and start shooting indiscriminately.
The incident was “not political”, Trujillo said.
He said the injured are being treated at hospitals in Tuquerres and Pasto, Narino’s capital.
Tuquerres Mayor Gloria Bolanos and the police commander in Narino, Col. William Montezuma Lopez, convened a town meeting to discuss public safety.
