4.8 magnitude aftershock jolts Christchurch

Christchurch, Mar 5(ANI): A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch, New Zealand’s second largest city, on Saturday.

According to Stuff.co.nz, the earthquake occurred at 7.34 p.m. local time, and was centered 10 kilometre east of Christchurch. No casualties have been reported.

There have been more than nine aftershocks in Christchurch on Saturday, ending an aftershock-free period of 14 hours.

The ground has been shaking much of Saturday.

It follows the 6.3 magnitude earthquake, which struck the city on February 22 and is regarded New Zealand’s deadliest natural disaster in 80 years.

The last person to be pulled alive from the rubble was found over a week ago, one day after the earthquake struck.

The death toll from the disaster has reached 165, and is expected to rise further.

Christchurch Police estimate that the final toll could be as high as 240.

Nationals from over 20 countries are among those missing. (ANI)
