4.5 tonnes of marijuana seized in Mexico
March 11th, 2011 - 11:49 am ICT by IANSMexico City, March 11 (IANS/EFE) Nearly 4.5 tonnes of marijuana were seized from three speedboats in northwestern Mexico, officials said.
The contraband was being transported in the three speedboats in Sonora state, the Navy Secretariat said Thursday.
The crewmen aboard the three vessels managed to flee.
The drugs were detected during a surveillance operation “in which ships, air units and marine infantry participated”, the secretariat said.
The armed forces have been conducting numerous operations against organised crime groups as part of President Felipe Calderon’s war on drugs.
