42 killed in Ecuador bus accident (Lead)
August 30th, 2010 - 8:59 am ICT by IANSQuito, Aug 30 (IANS) At least 42 people were killed and 11 injured Sunday in Ecuador when a bus carrying 53 passengers fell off a cliff, the Ecuadorian Red Cross said.
The accident occurred Sunday morning in the Andean region of Ecuador, Xinhua reported.
Most of the injured were in serious conditions and had been taken to nearby hospitals.
The bus was traveling from Cuenca, in the centre of the country, to the capital Quito.
The latest toll has not been confirmed by the police. Earlier, Ecuadorian Interior Minister Gustavo Jalkh said 38 people died in the accident.
