Kabul, March 13 (Xinhua) At least 41 Taliban insurgents have been killed in a joint operation by Afghan troops and NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in the southwestern Afghan province of Nimroz, officials said Thursday. The joint forces engaged the insurgents in Khash Rod district Tuesday when they found the rebels moving from Nimroz to the neighbouring Helmand province, said Ghulan Dastghir Azad, governor of Nimroz province.

The clashes between the security forces and the insurgents left 41 militants, including their commander Mullah Toor Jan, dead, the provincial governor said.

He added that 17 bodies have been recovered and buried in the district.

Conflicts and Taliban-related violence in the war-ravaged country have claimed nearly 8,000 lives last year, according to a UN report released Wednesday.

More than 210 people have so far been killed, mostly in suicide attacks and roadside bombings, this year across the country.
