40 policemen hurt in Mexico prison riot
July 26th, 2010 - 11:36 am ICT by IANSMexico City, July 26 (IANS/EFE) At least 40 police officers and an unspecified number of inmates were injured in a riot at a prison in Mexico. Authorities have regained control of the facility, officials said.
The prison riot started when an inmate was being helped by other prisoners to escape through a tunnel at the El Amate prison in Cintalapa city, government officials said Sunday.
Over 2,100 federal and local police officers took part in the operation to regain control of the prison. Tear gas canisters, a fire bomb, two firearms, knives, ammunition, cocaine and marijuana were seized from the inmates, they said.
The prison uprising’s leader and seven other inmates were arrested after other prisoners identified them as the main organisers of the riot. They have been transferred to other prisons across Mexico.
