4 Bangladesh doctors to be tried for faking autopsy report
March 28th, 2011 - 6:02 pm ICT by IANSDhaka, March 28 (IANS) A Dhaka court Monday ordered the trial of four government doctors who suppressed evidence of the rape and flogging of a teenaged girl and faked her autopsy report.
The court also asked the health secretary and director general of health to take departmental action against the four doctors who concealed evidence about the victim who was raped and later flogged as per a fatwa issued by a local priest.
The 15-year-old victim of Shariatpur, near the national capital, was raped by Mahbub, her 40-year-old cousin, and was afterwards flogged at least 50 times following the religious edict Jan 24.
She fell unconscious during the public flogging and succumbed to her injuries Jan 31, The Daily Star website reported.
Her case hit the headlines since besides the alleged rapist and those who organised the fatwa, police officers have also been arraigned before the court.
The High Court Monday directed the government to prosecute the four doctors, including a civil surgeon, on criminal charges for preparing a fake autopsy report of the teenager.
A bench of Justice A.H.M. Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain passed the order against the four doctors after examining the health department’s probe report.
The probe report said the first autopsy report by the Shariatpur doctors was fake, but the second report prepared by the Dhaka Medical College Hospital was proper.
