300-year-old Chinese vase sells for $32 mn
October 10th, 2010 - 1:06 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, Oct 10 (IANS) A 300-year-old vase from China’s Qing dynasty has sold for a whopping $32.5 million at Sotheby’s.
The vase, made during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), was among a selection of rare works that went under the hammer at Sotheby’s autumn sale in Hong Kong.
It fetched 252.6 million Hong Kong dollars ($32.5 million), a world record auction price for Chinese porcelain, the China Daily reported.
Hong Kong art expert Alice Cheng won the bidding for the Qing vase. He had earlier spent 151 million Hong Kong dollars on an imperial family rose bowl from the reign of Emperor Qianlong at a Christie’s sale in Hong Kong in 2006.
Chinese artworks have taken their place on the world auction stage, said Nicolas Chow, Sotheby’s deputy chairman and international head of Chinese ceramics and artwork.
The highest price for any piece of art has, however, been for a Picasso painting titled “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust”, which sold for 70 million pounds ($111 million) at a Christie’s sale in May.
