2.6 tons of cocaine seized in Spain
July 4th, 2010 - 5:27 pm ICT by IANSMadrid, July 4 (IANS/EFE) Spanish authorities have arrested 10 people with over 2.6 tons of cocaine being shipped from Colombia, police said.
The seize confirmed police suspicions about a new drug-trafficking route linking the Caribbean, Africa and Europe.
Details of the operation dubbed ‘Southern Sea’ were revealed by the security force in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Canary Islands’ second city, at a press conference Saturday.
Lt. Col. Ricardo Arranz said that the operation took place in the Spanish cities of Tenerife, Melilla, Malaga and Almeria, and culminated June 28 with the confiscation of 2.6 tons of cocaine, separated into 93 bundles, after the sailboat Lulu was boarded on the high seas.
Those who were arrested included seven Spanish nationals, one Lithuanian, a German and a Uruguayan.
