25 percent of Britons to be added to police database
June 17th, 2011 - 2:39 pm ICT by IANSLondon, June 17 (IANS) The identities of 25 percent of the British population will now be added to the national police database.
The database run by the National Policing Improvement Agency is being loaded with up to 15 million records of criminals, suspects and victims, the Daily Mail reported.
Britain has a population of around 61.8 million.
Officials hope the new database will stop criminals from slipping through the police net.
Many, however, fear that public could find their personal details alongside those of murderers, rapists and burglars.
Police departments in 43 territories in England and Wales, eight in Scotland, and the British Transport Police and the Police Service of Northern Ireland will contribute to the database.
The database was recommended by former civil servant Michael Bichard, who filed a report saying police intelligence must be “centralised”.
