Baghdad, June 21 (IANS) At least 25 people were killed and 34 others injured Tuesday morning in two car bomb explosions in a central Iraqi city, Xinhua reported.

The blasts occurred near the house of provincial governor Salim Hussein Alwan in Diwaniyah, the capital of Iraq’s central province of Al Qadsiyah, said a police source.

Diwaniyah city is 180 km south of Baghdad, the Iraqi capital.

“The latest reports said that 25 people were killed and some 34 others were wounded by the double car bomb blasts outside the house of Al Qadsiyah governor,” said the source requesting anonymity.

The attack occurred when two booby-trapped cars went off during a shift change of guards at the checkpoint outside the house of the governor of Al Qadsiyah province, the source said.

“Most of the victims were security guards, who were gathering at the site, and some other victims were residents inside the neighbouring houses,” the source said, adding “Alwan himself escaped the attack unharmed”.
