24 policemen killed in Maoist ambush in Orissa (Lead)

Bhubaneswar, July 16 (IANS) As many as 24 policemen were killed when Maoist rebels blew up their vehicle in Orissa’s Malkangiri district, the police said. The anti-landmine vehicle carrying the policemen was returning from the ‘MPV41′ village where rebels Tuesday night looted a contractor’s house and set fire to five of his vehicles, the police said.

The Maoists Wednesday triggered a landmine blast near ‘MV126′ village and blew up the vehicle.

“As per information reaching here, all the policemen in the vehicle are killed,” Sujit Naik, officer in charge of the ‘MV79′ police station, told IANS by telephone.
