230 protesters arrested in Chile
March 31st, 2010 - 11:49 am ICT by IANSSantiago, March 31 (IANS/EFE) At least 230 people have been arrested during two different protests in Chile but no one was injured in the incidents, a top official has said.
Ninety-seven people were arrested in Greater Santiago during the commemoration of “The Day of the Young Combatant,” Deputy Interior Secretary Rodrigo Ubilla said Tuesday.
Another 133 people were arrested for violating the curfew in the earthquake-stricken region of Bio Bio, but those arrests were unrelated to acts of violence, he said.
“The Day of the Young Combatant” marks the deaths of brothers Rafael and Eduardo Vergara Toledo, members of the Revolutionary Left Movement, who were killed by security forces on March 29, 1985, in Santiago during a protest against Augusto Pinochet’s military dictatorship.
Unlike other years when minors were also involved in the protests, almost all those arrested Tuesday were adults, he said.
Last year, there were 79 arrests and 19 people were injured including 11 police officials, while in 2008 one person was killed, nine were wounded and 122 were arrested.
