Kabul, June 25 (Xinhua) At least 22 insurgents have been killed and 12 detained in overnight operations carried out by the US-led coalition forces in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Paktika and southern province of Helmand, officials said. In one incident, insurgents attacked Afghan security forces in Sarobi district centre of Paktika province late Tuesday. The government forces retaliated with small-arms fire and called for help, coalition forces said in a statement here Wednesday.
After the additional troops arrived at the scene, a fierce gunbattle ensued that killed at least 22 militants, it said.
In another incident, several militants were killed and 12 detained in an operation in Helmand province Tuesday. Authorities have not given the details of the fatalities.
A large stock of ammunition and narcotics belonging to the militants were destroyed by the security forces on the spot, a military statement said.
More than 2,000 people have been killed in insurgency related violence this year in Afghanistan.
