21 dead in China road accidents

Beijing, Jan 12 (IANS) At least 21 people were killed and 29 injured in two bus accidents in China, authorities said Wednesday.In Xuchang in central China’s Henan province, a bus crashed on an expressway Tuesday evening, killing 16 people and injuring 25, police said.

The bus initially hit two cars that had already collided with each other. It then smashed through the expressway safety barrier, hurtled down a slope and overturned, Xi Hongyu, deputy head of Xuchang traffic police, was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Investigations showed that the bus had 43 people on board, while the limit is 35, Xi said.

While four passengers died at the spot, 12 died later in hospital.

In the other accident, a bus overturned on a highway in Wuwei in Gansu province early Wednesday, killing five people and severely injuring four, a spokesman said.

The bus was carrying 27 people when the accident took place, the spokesman said.
