20-year-old Chinese n-plant totally safe
November 27th, 2011 - 3:42 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, Nov 27 (IANS) China’s first nuclear power plant that was set up in 1991 has been operating safely for the past 20 years, the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has announced.
The Qinshan plant, situated near Shanghai, has seen no accidents that either endangered human safety or impacted the environment in the past two decades, the China Daily reported Sunday.
From December 1991 to October 2011, the plant has generated electricity with nuclear energy and saved at least 16 million tonnes of coal, cut 40 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emission and 1.2 million tonnes of sulphur dioxide emission.
CNNC president Sun Qin said nuclear power remains a practical choice for China, and the corporation will continue to explore advanced technologies for safe and efficient development of nuclear energy in the nation.
The Qinshan plant was the first on the Chinese mainland which was designed, built and operated independently by domestic engineers.
Nuclear plants across the world were checked after an earthquake and tsunami damaged the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan in March.
