20 killed in Afghan suicide attack
December 25th, 2011 - 11:14 pm ICT by IANSKabul, Dec 25 (IANS) At least 20 people, including a parliamentarian, were killed and over 50 injured in a suicide blast during a funeral in Afghanistan’s northern Takhar province Sunday, said officials.
“The incident occurred when a funeral, held for a local elder, concluded. Just as the people were leaving the area, a suicide bomber blew his explosive vest inside the crowd, killing 20 people and injuring more than 50 others,” Xinhua quoted a police spokesman as saying.
All the victims were civilians, he added.
“I confirm that member of the lower house of parliament Abdul Mutalib Baig was among those killed in the incident,” said the provincial government’s spokesman.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
