17 killed in Mexico violence

Mexico City, Feb 19 (IANS) Seventeen people were killed in two incidents of fresh violence in Mexico, authorities said. Eight gunmen were killed Friday morning in a 40-minute shootout with soldiers in Monterrey city, capital of Nuevo Leon state in northern Mexico, Xinhua reported.

The soldiers seized eight weapons including AK-47 and G-3 assault riffles, one grenade launcher and some vehicles.

Also early Friday, nine people were killed in clashes between rival gangs in Acapulco port of Guerrero state, southern Mexico, security officials said.

More than 120 people have died since January this year across the country in violence related to organised crime, according to local media reports.
