Lhasa, April 29 (Xinhua) Seventeen people were sentenced Tuesday to jail terms ranging from three years to life for their involvement in the March 14 violence in the Tibetan capital. The Intermediate People’s Court of Lhasa awarded the sentences at an open trial.
Seven schools, five hospitals and 120 homes were torched in the violence that erupted during protests against the Chinese rule by a section of Tibetans. Some 908 shops were looted. The estimated damage in the riot was more than 244 million Yuan ($35 million).
A total of 18 civilians and one police officer died in the riot, which left some 382 civilians and 241 policemen injured.
