February 1st, 2010 - 6:14 pm ICT by IANSBaghdad, Feb 1 (IANS/AKI) At least 16 people were killed and 38 injured Monday when a female suicide bomber blew herself up targeting pilgrims in northeast Baghdad, police said.
The woman detonated her suicide vest in Boub El Sham district at a refreshment stall as thousands of Shia pilgrims walked by, they said.
The pilgrims flooded the streets to begin a trek to the city of Karbala, 80 km southwest of Baghdad, to observe Arbaeen.
Arbaeen marks the end of 40 days of mourning for the death of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein, a holy figure for Shia Muslims.
