1.5mln Firefox users attempt world download record
June 18th, 2008 - 5:18 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, June 18 (ANI): More than 1.5 million users of the Mozilla Firefox web browser have joined hands to attempt setting a world record for the most downloads of a software program in 24 hours.
The Guinness World Record download attempt started at 3am (AEST) this morning as Download Day, and will finish at the same time tomorrow.
The attempt coincides with the release of Firefox 3.
Firefox is the second most popular browser in the world after Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, and one of the most well-known examples of the open source code ideology, a principle that encourages community participation in software development.
An independent survey recently revealed that the highest percentage of Firefox users across the world belonged to Oceania, including Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
Though over 25,000 Australians had pledged to participate in Download Day, only one group of people will represent the local fanbase with a party to mark the release of Firefox 3.
“How come nobody likes to party in Australia?” News.com.au quoted Mozilla Party Central, a website that encourages and maps official fan parties, as saying. (ANI)
