15 dead as tour bus overturns in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, May 1 (DPA) At least 15 people were killed and 40 injured when a tour bus overturned in rainy conditions in Hong Kong Thursday, the police said. The bus, carrying mostly elderly people to a May Day religious event in the popular seaside resort of Sai Kung, crashed on a roundabout at the end of a dual carriageway.

Rescue workers said 15 people were confirmed dead at the scene and 40 injured in the accident, which led to a number of major roads being closed down.

The accident happened on the main road to Hong Kong’s eastern New Territories, a rural area that is heavily visited by tour groups on public holidays and weekends.

If the casualty figures are confirmed, it would be the worst road accident in Hong Kong since 2003 when 21 people died as a double-decker bus was shunted off the edge of a 30-metre highway bridge by a truck.
