14 missing in Nepal landslide
September 1st, 2009 - 9:01 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Kathmandu, Sep 1 (DPA) At least 14 people were missing and presumed dead after a landslide hit a remote village in western Nepal, police said Tuesday.
The landslide hit the village of Jaleswor in Khotang district, about 120 km east of Kathmandu, early Tuesday.
The victims were sleeping when their homes were swept away by falling mud, rock and other debris, police said.
Rescue teams were scouring the area but had not found any trace of the victims, district police in Khotang said.
The landslide was triggered by heavy monsoon rains which had affected the area for the past few days.
Police said continuing bad weather had made search operations difficult and hopes of finding anyone alive were fast fading.
Hundreds of people are killed every year in Nepal by landslides and flash floods during the monsoon season.
Government officials said over 100 people had died in flooding and landslides across Nepal this year.
