12 killed in Kabul attack (Lead)

Taliban Kabul, June 18 (IANS) Twelve people, among them four policemen and three suicide bombers, were killed and 12 others were wounded when militants attacked a police station in Kabul Saturday, Xinhua reported.

The bombers were dressed in Afghan military uniform. One of the attackers blew himself up at the gate of the police station, while two others were gunned down by the security forces. Five civilians were also killed, the interior ministry said.

The gun battle started around 1.30 p.m. and continued for two hours, police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai said. The injured were mostly civilians.

The police station is located in downtown Kabul close to the defence ministry and the presidential palace.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
