11 people hanged in Iran
May 27th, 2011 - 10:31 pm ICT by IANSTehran, May 27 (IANS/AKI) Eleven people convicted for various crimes were hanged in different Iranian cities on a single day, state media reported Friday.
A man convicted for killing five women was hanged in Qazvin, west of Tehran, Thursday.
Four people were hanged in public in the southern city of Shiraz after being convicted for kidnapping and armed robbery.
Four drug traffickers were hanged in Yasouj prison in west Iran and two in Sari prison in north Iran.
Drug trafficking, murder and rape are all punishable with the death penalty in Iran.
The executions, however, drew condemnation from the Iran Human Rights group.
“These barbaric executions using ordinary citizens, especially minors to carry them out must be condemned by the world community,” said spokesman Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam.
“Iranian leaders must be held accountable for promoting a culture of murder and brutality in Iran,” he said.
Iran Human Rights cited official reports as saying at least 52 people have been executed in May, and 13 of them were carried out in public.
