Shiraz (Iran), April 13, (IANS) At least 11 people were killed and some 200 wounded in a blast in the capital city of Iran’s southern province of Fars, IRNA reported Sunday. A powerful explosion at Rahpouyan-e Vessal cultural center that is part of a mosque, located in a residential area of the city, took place around 9:00 pm (1630 GMT) Saturday during an evening sermon by a prominent local cleric.
A committee has been formed to investigate the explosion, provincial governor Hojatoleslam Jaber Baneshi said after an emergency meeting to review the situation.
However, Shiraz public prosecutor said that sabotage as a possible cause of the blast has not yet been proved.
Meanwhile, security has been stepped up in the city and the site of the explosion cordoned off and all streets leading to the mosque have been sealed, police said.
