Beirut, Aug 13 (Xinhua) At least 11 people were killed and some 40 wounded in an explosion in a bus in northwest Lebanon’s Tripoli city Wednesday, ANB TV reported. Eight of the killed were army soldiers and three civilians, the TV said.

TV footage showed a small public bus riddled with shrapnel from the blast, while broken glass could be seen strewn over the street.

The bomb was placed among the belongings of the soldiers who were waiting to board buses to their service posts, according to TV report.

Tripoli has been the scene of sectarian clashes between pro-government Sunni and opposition Alawait supporters in the past months, in which at least 23 people have been killed.

The explosion took place as Lebanese President Michel Suleiman was scheduled to travel to Damascus Wednesday, the first by a Lebanese president since 2005 when Syrian troops withdrew from Lebanon following the assassination of Lebanese premier Hariri, for talks with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad over resumption of diplomatic ties.
