Islamabad, Aug 3 (Xinhua) At least 10 Taliban militants were killed Sunday in an operation by security forces in northwest Pakistan’s Swat Valley, a media report said. The operation was carried out in the Peech Banr area of the valley, where at least 10 militants were killed, state-run PTV reported. A soldier also died in the operation.

Taliban has so far not confirmed the report.

On Saturday, militants burnt down two girls’ schools and blew up two bridges in the valley.

The security forces have launched a major operation against the Taliban in the valley after militants kidnapped over 20 security personnel from a checkpost last Monday.

The local residents have left their homes after helicopter gunships of the security forces began pounding positions of the militants in the area.

The government has claimed that over 50 Taliban fighters have been killed in the clashes so far.
