September 13th, 2010 - 11:23 am ICT by IANSSan Salvador, Sep 13 (IANS/EFE) One inmate died and at least 50 were wounded during a brawl at a prison in El Salvador, a media report said Sunday.
The fight broke out Saturday in the Sendero de Libertad youth rehabilitation centre in the town of Ilobasco, 55 km northeast of San Salvador.
The violence erupted over authorities’ plan to transfer the inmates, who confronted the guards with knives and blunt objects and beat them, El Diario de Hoy reported.
A 17-year-old, interned there for robbery, was killed and 50 other inmates were injured, of whom 25 were taken to the Ilobasco hospital, La Prensa Grafica said.
The situation was brought under control with the arrival of a National Civilian Police’s riot prevention unit.
