Zimbabwe embassy car mows down child in Delhi

New Delhi, March 4 (IANS) A car belonging to the Zimbabwean embassy crushed a three-year-old beggar girl to death in southwest Delhi Tuesday evening while she was crossing the road, the police said. The accident occurred around 6 p.m. near the Rao Tula Ram Marg traffic intersection on the Outer Ring Road when the car hit the girl identified as Babli.

The driver of the car, Yusuf Messi, a resident of R.K. Puram area, failed to notice the girl and ran over her, a police official said.

Messi, 35, rushed the girl to the nearby Indian Spinal Injury Centre, where doctors declared her brought dead. The hospital informed the police.

“We have informed the embassy about the accident and are registering a case against the driver, who would be arrested shortly,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kumar Gyanesh told IANS.

The official said that there was no embassy official present in the car when the accident took place.

The police said the vehicle could not be impounded as it belonged to an embassy.
