YSR’s widow, brother file nominations for bypolls
April 16th, 2011 - 6:37 pm ICT by IANSHyderabad, April 16 (IANS) The late Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s widow Y.S. Vijayamma and his brother Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy Saturday filed nominations for May 8 bypolls from the Pulivendula assembly constituency in Kadapa district.
Vijayamma, accompanied by her son Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, filed her papers before the returning officer at MRO office in Pulivendula as a candidate of the YSR Congress Party. The partywas launched last month.
Jaganmohan Reddy Friday filed his nomination for the by-election to the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat.
Vijayamma visited the grave of her husband and offered prayers before filing the papers.
The bypolls were caused by the resignations of the mother-son duo, who also quit the Congress party in November last year, accusing the party leadership of trying to divide the family.
YSR’s younger brother Y.S.Vivekananda Reddy also filed his nomination Saturday for the Pulivendula assembly seat. He resigned as a state cabinet minister before filing his papers.
Vivekananda Reddy, whose induction in the cabinet last year triggered resignations of his sister-in-law Vijayamma and nephew Jagan, is contesting as the candidate of ruling Congress party.
Vivekananda’s term as member of the state legislative council ended last month. He has to get elected to either house of the state legislature to again become the minister.
State Health Minister D.L. Ravindra Reddy also filed his nomination Saturday for the Kadapa Lok Sabha seat. Unlike Vivekananda, he has not resigned as minister before entering the fray.
Main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has fielded M.V. Mysoora Reddy as its candidate for the Lok sabha bypoll from Kadapa. While it will be a three-cornered contest in Kadapa, the assembly constituency will witness a direct fight between Vijayamma and her brother-in-law.
Vijayamma was elected unopposed from Pulivendula in December 2009 by-election caused by the death of her husband in a helicopter crash.
Jagan was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kadapa in April 2009 polls.
