Srinagar, June 29 (IANS) Tension mounted in the Kashmir valley Sunday evening following the death of a youth, injured in firing by paramilitary forces during protests against land allotment to Amarnath shrine authorities earlier, taking the toll to five. Police said Imtiyaz Ahmad Haroon, 25, succumbed to his critical abdominal injury in the Srinagar’s SMHS hospital Sunday evening.
As the body of Imtiyaz was taken to his home in Bemina in city outskirts, hundreds of people came out on the streets shouting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
Police fired warning shots and resorted to repeated baton charges to disperse the protestors.
The death toll in the week-old protests against the forest land allotment to the Sri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) has gone up to five while over 300 people have been injured.
The body of the slain youth was buried in the martyr’s graveyard at Eidgah late Sunday evening.
