Youth bargains for money from sister’s rapist

Ranchi, April 5 (IANS) A youth did not perform the last rites of his 10-year-old sister who ended her life after being raped, to allegedly bargain for money from her rapist in Chatra district of Jharkhand. Diwakar Singh, a teacher, allegedly raped the girl in Kathaotia village of Chatra district, around 230 km from Ranchi, Feb 26.

The girl set herself on fire the same day. She was rushed to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS), Ranchi, in a critical condition, where she succumbed to her injuries April 1.

The family members took back the body to their village. Instead of performing the last rites, the girl’s brother started bargaining with the rapist.

According to reports appearing in local media Saturday, the body was kept in front of the house of Diwakar Singh who raped the girl.

According to reports, the girl’s brother demanded Rs.75,000 to hush up the case. The issue was brought to the notice of the administration.

A preliminary inquiry was conducted and it was found that the brother had taken Rs.5,000 from the teacher.

The district administration sacked the teacher and instituted an inquiry to probe the entire episode.
