Younis spoiled our chances to win the Test: JayawardeneFebruary 25th, 2009 - 8:52 pm ICT by IANS
Karachi, Feb 25 (IANS) Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene Wednesday said that
his Pakistan counterpart Younis Khan deprived them of an opportunity to win the first Test that ended in a draw here at the National Stadium.
“He (Younis) played really well and took away the opportunity of winning this Test from us,” Jayawardene said in his post-match conference.
Pakistan piled up 765-6 declared in reply to Sri lanka’s first innings total of 644-7 declared. Younis emerged as the star of Pakistan’s innings as he hit a superb 313 to save the match for the hosts.
Jayawardene, 31, said his team performed well except for the last couple of sessions that saw Pakistan scoring at a brisk rate and then returning to take five Sri Lankan wickets on the fifth day of the match.
“I’m happy with our performance but it was difficult to produce a results here,” he said, referring to the lifeless wicket at the National Stadium that offered no help to the bowlers.
Jayawardene defended his debutant opener Tharanga Paranavitana, who fell for 0 and 9 in the Test. “He is a very good batsman and will learn from this Test,” he said.
