Young wife burnt alive in West Bengal

Kolkata, Dec 9 (IANS) A 20-year-old woman was burnt alive by her husband in a West Bengal town, police said.Niyati Chakladar was set ablaze by her husband Rakhal, a rickshawpuller, at their Barasat residence in North 24 Paragans district around 11 p.m. Monday.

“Hearing her cries, neighbours rescued her and took her to a local clinic. She died Tuesday about 11.30 a.m. having suffered 80 percent burns,” a senior police official said.

He said the couple had an argument, following which Rakhal emptied kerosene over Niyati and set her afire with his lit cigarette.

“Rakhal is absconding since last night. We are trying to track him down and a murder case will be registered against him soon.”

Niyati got married to Rakhal Nov 20 after a love affair, which lasted eight months.

A neighbour Moti Santra said the couple engaged in frequent arguments as Rakhal wanted to start his business and expected Niyati to get Rs.50,000 from her parents. But she refused to ask for the money.
