Young mother ’stabs baby with scissors’
April 10th, 2011 - 8:29 pm ICT by IANSSydney, April 10 (IANS) A young Australian mother stabbed her newborn baby to death with a pair of scissors and tried to cover up the crime as a stillbirth, a media report said Sunday.
The relatives of the teenager found her bleeding after she gave birth at her Canowindra home in New South Wales Wednesday, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
She later told police that her baby boy had been stillborn, a court heard Saturday, the newspaper said.
An autopsy confirmed the baby had died from six stab wounds to the chest, including one that pierced his heart. The baby had also suffered from asphyxiation, possibly from being placed in a bucket after birth. Police have found a pair of bloodied scissors in her house.
The teenager has been charged with the baby’s murder. Her solicitor, Andrew Rolfe, had asked that she be released to the care of her parents so she could continue to receive medical treatment. Bail was refused and she is due to reappear in Orange Local Court Monday, the newspaper said.
