Young man dies in Tripura police custody
October 25th, 2010 - 5:23 pm ICT by IANSAgartala, Oct 25 (IANS) A 25-year-old man died in police custody in Tripura, causing opposition Congress to put up road blockades and demand high-level probe, officials said Monday.
“Hanif Mian was found hanging in the toilet of the Bishalgarh police station lock-up in western Tripura late Sunday. Hanif was arrested by police Friday,” police spokesman Nepal Das told reporters.
“A police officer, who was on duty during the incident, was suspended from service for negligence in duty,” Das said.
Opposition Congress put up a road blockade on the national highway in west Tripura, demanding a high level enquiry into this custodial death.
Congress leader Ratan Lal Nath, who visited the police station, alleged that the young man was murdered by the police.
