Yeddyurappa land grab: High court told to decide in six weeks (Lead)
April 29th, 2011 - 11:30 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, April 29 (IANS) The Supreme Court Friday rejected a petition challenging the Karnataka High Court’s interim order staying proceedings against Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and family in an alleged land grab case before the Lokayukta, but asked the high court to decide the matter in six weeks.
An apex court bench of Justice V.S. Sirpurkar and Justice T.S. Thakur passed the order after advocate Sirajin Basha told the court that the complaint before the Lokayukata’s court involved the question of public interest of combating corruption by the people holding high offices.
The interim order of the high court staying the proceedings before the Lokayukta’s court was passed March 29.
Basha moved the Lokayukta’s court after Karnataka Governor H.R. Bhardwaj gave the sanction to file a complaint against Yeddyurappa under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Basha said that he filed private complaints under the Criminal Procedure Code procedure code against Yeddyurappa and his family members for allegedly making undue gains by engaging in acts of corruption involving abuse of office.
As the Lokayukta’s court took cognisance of the complaint and initiated probe, Yeddyurappa moved the high court which in its interim order stayed the proceedings before the Lokayukta’s court.
Basha told the apex court that the petition raised questions of law and public importance regarding combating corruption by citizens by filing private complaints under Section 200 of the Criminal Procedure Code against the chief minister and others.
