WWF’s Adopt a Tree Campaign to start July 4
July 2nd, 2011 - 12:33 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 1 (IANS) The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) would kickstart its annual Adopt a Tree Campaign July 4 with active participation from various institutions, corporate houses, resident welfare associations and students, a official of the group said Friday.
“The campaign was initiated in 2005 with the mission of promoting plantation of native species in Delhi as they are more conducive to local environment,” said a WWF official.
Encouraged by the support received through the years from different sectors, the WWF would increase the campaign’s reach to other states from this year, the official said.
According to WWF, it has been providing tree saplings free of charge, with only one commitment - to nurture the sapling into a tree. Over 3,000 saplings were adopted last year.
“To ensure that the sapling is well nurtured we maintain a database of the saplings distributed and also do periodical follow ups to keep track of the trees,” added the official.
Interested individuals in the National Capital Region can adopt the saplings from 172-B, Lodi Estate, New Delhi. Institutions and corporates across the country can also approach for group adoption and for a plantation event.
