Ranbir alias Dhillu Phalwan, a suspended railways train ticket checker, was arrested Tuesday from a gas station in Rangpuri area and an Italy made .30 bore pistol loaded with two live cartridges was recovered from him, police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (south Delhi) H.G.S. Dhaliwal said Ranbir had been arrested four times earlier under the arms act and for extortion, theft and murder of a village head in Sonepat, Haryana.
“Ranbir is a renowned wrestler and has won several gold medals in national championships. He had also represented the country in Russia, Iran and China. He had won the gold medal in the Asian championship in China in 1996,” Dhaliwal said.
He carried a reward of Rs.20,000 on his head.
Police said he got a job in the Indian Railways on the basis of his achievement but he had made contacts with notorious gangsters Krishan Mehandipur, Rajesh Chitana and Jassu Halalpur right from the days of his wrestling.
