July 12th, 2010 - 10:28 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 12 (IANS) The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games, will be ready in the next 15 days, officials said Monday. The project has missed several deadlines so far.
The Central Public Works Department (CPWD), a central government arm, announced Monday that of the ten Games venues entrusted to it, seven have already been completed.
“We have completed work on seven of the 10 Games venues. At five of the seven, even test events have been held. The remaining three will be completed in nearly 15 days,” CPWD Director General B.K. Chugh told reporters.
Addressing the media on the agency’s 156th foundation day, he said Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, S.P.M. Swimming Pool complex and the new weightlifting stadium in the Nehru Stadium complex remains to be completed.
“At Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the building work is complete and only beautification and plantation work remains to be completed on 102 acres of land,” he added.
CPWD has undertaken the Games projects along with Delhi government and the Sports Authority of India.
An official said that a tunnel has been constructed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for the performers of the opening and closing ceremony, adding that the process delayed the works related to the roof and the track at the venue for about three months.
