Women rights panel framing guidelines for Air India
October 13th, 2009 - 8:27 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 13 (IANS) The National Commission for Women (NCW) Tuesday said that it would issue guidelines within a month to the national carrier Air India (AI) to address the frequent complaints by their women staff alleging harassment from male colleagues and management.
“We are preparing guidelines on the working environment for Air India, like we issued guidelines to the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry on the working hours for women,” NCW chairperson Girija Vyas said.
“The commission has had several complaints from women staff of the airline alleging misbehaviour and sexual and work place harassment from male airline crew and pilots. There have also been cases of gender discrimination for promotions, which is also due to the AI management rules,” Vyas said.
The NCW hopes to finalise the guidelines soon and issue them to the AI management within a month.
The latest incident is that of an Air India air hostess who alleged that she was molested and assaulted by two pilots on board a Delhi-bound flight from Sharjah earlier this month. The commission has constituted a five-member committee to probe the incident and asked it to submit its report within a month.
