Women form bulk of Mexico’s Twitter users
March 9th, 2011 - 12:22 pm ICT by IANSMexico City, March 9 (IANS/EFE) The typical Mexican Twitter user is a woman living in this capital, according to a survey carried out by marketing firm Mente Digital.
Women represent 52 percent of Mexicans with Twitter accounts and they post 2.5 times more messages than male users.
The country has 4.1 million Twitter users, which is equivalent to 7.4 percent of Mexicans using the Internet.
Mexico City is where the largest number of users are concentrated, 60 percent, followed by the country’s other two large cities - Monterrey, 17 percent; and Guadalajara, 10 percent. The rest of the nation has only 13 percent of Mexico’s Twitter users.
Mexican Twitter users who interact with foreigners - with those interactions comprising 9 percent of all conversations - in general have the most contact, in rank order, with Argentines, Spaniards, Americans, Chileans, Colombians and Canadians.
Their favourite day to send tweets is Tuesday, and the day on which they are least active is Sunday. One in every 12 messages includes a “hashtag” (#), a symbol used to organize tweets thematically. About 90 percent of active users only post one or fewer messages per day, on average.
The analysis by Mente Digital was carried out using a proprietary computing tool between December and February, based on profiles, location and analysis of conversations, among other criteria.
Like other countries, Mexico creates its own trending topics whereby users can follow the pulse of public opinion.
