Woman posing as PMO official arrested
January 25th, 2012 - 10:46 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 25 (IANS) A 51-year-old woman who cheated several people by posing as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), landed in the police net when she approached the civil aviation regulator to intercede on behalf of a suspended pilot, said police Wednesday.
Sumangali Francina Easther Charles alias Suman Singh, resident of Hyderabad, was arrested from Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport Tuesday when she arrived here from Chennai.
Charles, who is married to a Delhi-based builder, was arrested for allegedly approaching Director General of Civil Aviation Bharat Bhushan on Dec 20 last year.
Sandeep Goel, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), said Bhushan had told police that one Suman Singh had telephoned him posing as an OSD in the PMO and had asked him to give appointment to a pilot, Captain Amar Singh.
“The next day, Bhushan met Singh in his office and found that he pilot had been barred from flying due to a suspected fraud in obtaining a licence. He enquired from the PMO and found that there was no such OSD or other official by the name of Suman Singh. A case was registered after that,” Goel said.
She was earlier arrested in a similar case by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police in 2003 when she posed as the additional private secretary to then deputy prime minister L.K. Advani and had called the commissioner of customs, New Delhi, asking for a personal favour in a case.
“Later on, during the trial of case she jumped bail and was declared an absconder in October last year,” added the officer.
She was also arrested in April last year by Hyderabad police in a cheating case on the complaint of a city land-owner Mohammed Kaisar in which she posed as OSD in the PMO and allegedly cheated him to a tune of Rs.50 lakh by convincing him that she could help him in getting Rs.40 crore compensation in an evacuee custodian land.
“She used to collect money from gullible people by promising them jobs and settling their pending works and disputes by talking to senior government officers,” added the official.
