Woman, paramour arrested for gun-running in Delhi

New Delhi, June 13 (IANS) A woman and her paramour was arrested from west Delhi for running a racket in supplying illegal weapons here, police said Monday.

Police said that Kamla, 40, and Naveen, 28, would procure illegally manufactured weapons from Madhya Pradesh at Rs.30,000-35,000 and then sell these for Rs.50,000-60,000 in Delhi and adjoining Faridabad and Gurgaon in Haryana), and Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.

“They were arrested from Kanjhawala-Karala road in west Delhi Saturday on a tip-off. Seven sophisticated pistols, five live cartridges, and two spare magazines were recovered from them,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Chand said.

During interrogation, they told police that they were previously involved in several crimes. “In 2009, both of them were arrested at Thanesar (Haryana) for attempt to dacoity, assault on public servant and possession of illegal weapon. After they came out on bail, they got together again and began the trade in illegal guns,” said Chand.

Kamla got involved in crime after death of her husband a few years ago. She began her crime career as a bootlegger before taking to violent crime.

Naveen, who hails from Rohtak in Haryana, is involved in more than eight criminal cases.
